Air Thermal
Air source heat pumps absorb heat from the outside air and using principles similar to a domestic fridge pump and compress the air to extract the heat at a high efficiency compared to the electricity used to power those devices. The term COP is used to describe its efficiency which can be as high as 4:1 i.e. 4 times the energy gained from the ambient air to the electricity heat potential of the power used.
However air thermal is best combined with ground thermal to maintain a high heating performance all year; round day and night.
New designs will achieve higher efficiencies and as units decrease in size and cost will begin appearing on the walls of every house complementing the other sustainable technologies to optimise the local environmental supplies of heat and electricity.
