Zuvaguru is a project that seeks to evaluate the positive impact that can be generated through developing sustainable power supply capacity and the adoption of computers among disadvantaged people of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Power shortage is a major concern in SADC countries. The Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) noted that demand for power in the region is increasing at a rate of about 3% per annum due to increased economic activities. However, investment in both power generation and supply infrastructure remain constrained mainly due to lack of funding. This project will recommend power generation solutions based on locally sourced and sustainable renewable resources such as wind power, solar power, hydropower, wave energy, biomass, bioctane and geothermal.
Through pairing of appropriate sustainable power generation technologies and high impact social initiatives in different locations of the SADC countries, Zuvaguru project will be innovative and unique with its regional perspective and multidisciplinary approach. In addition, the facilitation of computer uptake among the disadvantaged communities benefiting from the sustainable electricity supply will also put this project in a unique position to make substantial advances at the frontiers of knowledge in both areas of ICT adoption theories and power generation from renewable resources.
