Hydrogen is potentially the best example of a clean and sustainable fuel to replace oil in ships and aircraft. It can be produced by separating water, and when oxidised it produces only water. However, at present there are few economically feasible methods of producing hydrogen in this way and significant amounts are produced for refineries as a byproduct of fossil oil processes.​
